Frequently Asked Questions

When should I begin using ScarAway®?

You may begin using ScarAway® as soon as the skin is healed and there is no oozing or crusting in the area. Treatment with ScarAway® for post surgical scars may typically begin approximately 1-2 weeks after stitches are removed or when cleared by your physician or surgeon for use. For existing scars, you may begin using ScarAway® right away, provided your skin is fully healed.

Can I use ScarAway® on any part of my body?

Yes, when used as directed, ScarAway® Silicone Sheets can be used on any part of the body avoiding mucous membranes, open wounds, areas with active acne lesions, and direct contact with eyes. However, for hard-to-reach areas like the scalp or ears, or for the face, use ScarAway® Scar Diminishing Gel.

Can ScarAway® be used on scars of different sizes and shapes?

Yes, ScarAway® is available in two convenient sizes (1.5″ x 3″ and 1.5″ x 7″) to treat scars of various shapes and sizes. ScarAway® Silicone Sheets may be trimmed for smaller scars or worn side-by-side for larger scars. The sheets should extend beyond the scar area on all sides by at least 1/4.”

How long will it take before I notice improvement?

A softening of the scar may occur in just a few days. Improvement in scar color and thickness may be seen in as little as 4-8 weeks.  Individual results will vary.

How long do I need to use ScarAway®?

Treatment duration will vary from person to person and from scar to scar, depending on many factors. Recommended Minimum treatment time is 60-90 days. Larger and older scars may take longer, therefore continued use is recommended if improvement is still seen after the initial 90 days. Individual results will vary.

Can I wear ScarAway® while exercising or bathing?

It is not ideal, as perspiration and many soaps, shampoos, etc. may interfere with adhesion.  It is recommended that sheets be removed and reapplied following these activities.

Is ScarAway® safe?

Yes. ScarAway® is an FDA Class-1 medical device for the treatment and reduction of scars.

Does ScarAway® have any side effects?

As with any topical material applied directly to the skin’s surface, some type of reaction (usually a sweat rash) is possible.  In the unlikely event you have a reaction, stop using Scaraway®. After your skin has returned to normal, you may reapply Scaraway® for short periods and gradually increase the hours of usage. Monitor the scar area for signs of reaction. Continue to increase the wearing time until a comfortable maximum has been reached. If you continue to have a problem, discontinue use and consult your physician.

ScarAway® Silicone Scar Sheets FAQ

How do ScarAway® Silicone Scar Sheets work?

ScarAway® uses Advanced Patented Silicone Technology, a specially formulated silicone that mimics the natural barrier function of healthy skin, diminishing scars both old and new, and restoring skin to a more natural texture and color. Research suggests that silicone acts to hydrate scar tissue, which in turn works to soften the scar, reducing its development and causing it to fade. ScarAway® helps alleviate the itching and discomfort that often accompany scars.

What types of scars does ScarAway® work on?

ScarAway® works on hypertrophic scars and keloids, which have a raised and discolored appearance. These types of scars may result from surgical procedures, skin injuries and burns.

Can I use ScarAway® on an old scar?

Yes. ScarAway® is effective on scars that are years old, as well as scars that are more recent. The patented silicone sheets work to soften, fade, shrink and smooth so the scar appears closer to your skin’s natural color and texture.

How long should I wear each sheet?

Each ScarAway® sheet should be worn a minimum of 12 and up to 24 hours per day, provided it is removed and the scar area and sheet are washed daily. The longer silicone is in contact with your skin, the faster you may see results. Each sheet is washable and durable for 7 days use (14 days for ScarAway® Long and C-section sheets). If desired, use Scaraway® silicone Scar Diminishing Gel when not wearing your sheet.

Massage Tips and Techniques IMPORTANT: Scar massage should only be started after the wound has closed completely.

  • Scar massage should be done gently over the length of the scar and the surrounding tissue.
  • Begin massage with gentle circular motions. If this is comfortable, you may add horizontal and vertical massage motions.
  • Gradually increase massage pressure daily over duration of treatment.

Scars vary in sensitivity, and newer scars are often more sensitive and require very gentle massage techniques. These tips are intended as a guide only. If irritation occurs, stop use and consult your health care provider.
